Bringing in the New Year

It's almost a new year, and a new year brings new opportunities and change and excitement. This year I am going to try and avoid the typical resolutions, like eating better and working out more. I am shooting for life changes that will last and make a difference in my life. More sensitivity towards my husband, more patience towards my kids, more generosity towards my friends and neighbors. And it would be nice to have more chocolate in the house. You know, to replace all that wine that I can no longer have.
I want to start out the new year by helping people get fresh water. The RRLA Project has almost reached the half-way mark to building its own well for a deserving community. I know we can do this, and with your help we can reach our goal soon and get that well going! I keep picturing 250 people, who haven't ever known clean water, walking up to a brand new well in their town, and drinking. Drinking! Can you imagine what that must feel like? How their bodies would absorb the goodness and their thirst would be quenched? How such a simple task but yet huge worry would become easier in their lives?

I know we all give to charities throughout the year for different causes, and this may not be your cause. But if you feel called to give, just know that any amount helps. Cute story, Loudoun counted out $.78 from his piggy bank the other night and wanted to donate. I tried to use my credit card online, but it looks like the donation needs to be at least 1 whole dollar. :-)

Giving is colorful

Especially in Loudoun's world. From now until our project deadline, if you donate to the RRLA Project water well, Loudoun has offered to color a picture for you, and mail it to your house! His one of a kind creations might be worth millions one day, and you could own one before anyone else. And really, it is worth millions now, because it will be contributing towards a worthy cause. WATER. Any dollar amount is appreciated, and any dollar amount is worthy of a Loudoun original.

Each year, Americans spend about $450 billion celebrating the holidays. That's enough to solve the water crisis several times over.

Did you know that $20 can provide water for a person for 2 years? Can you imagine being able to provide something so valuable to someone, for only $20? Are you able to spare a few Starbucks visits this month? How about a few less drive-thru trips? What if you bought generic items instead of brands name items, in order to put a few bucks towards water for someone who needs it? Every dollar helps.

Wanna build a well with us?

This year, the Campbells have decided to give up our Christmas presents and instead donate the money we would have spent on each other to Charity: Water. We have set-up our own donation project, the RRLA Project, in the hopes of raising enough money to build a brand new well. The goal is $5,000, and we hope you find it in your hearts to contribute to this cause as well.

Redirecting the Concept of Christmas

The holidays - a time for family, comfort and love.

Joy to the world, right?

Here's the reality, though, of Christmas in our world: America spends around $500 billion a year on Christmas gifts. That's more than $600 a person. We also spend another $8 billion on decorating for Christmas.

Isn't there something wrong with this picture?

This Christmas, I'm taking a step back from that world. This Christmas, I want to give more than gifts that fit in boxes.

I want to give people life.

More than a billion people are living without water on our planet. Some walk miles every day to get to the nearest source: a stagnant, parasite-infested stream or pond. They lug it back to their families. They suffer from diarrhea, worms and skin diseases because they can't wash themselves. 45,000 people die each day from waterborne illnesses.

Our mission is to raise $5,000 by March 2010. That amount will create one entirely new well! 100% of every penny I raise will go directly to the water projects. And every project is "proved" using GPS technology and photos and put on Google Earth. Together, we'll be able to see the impact we've made.

One billion people, one cause. The least we can do is give one Christmas.
